Welcome to P177@295 a District 75 elementary school for grades K-5 co-located on the 2nd floor of community school PS/IS 295. Our class ratios consist of alternate assessment 12:1:4, 8:1:1, 12:1:1 and 6:1:1 classes. A full time nurse is present to accommodate the specific medical needs of our students, located on the 2nd floor with our classrooms. We are an accessible and barrier free school with all students having access to the gymnasium, auditorium, and school yard. The school yard is the location for our Halloween Parade, Breast Cancer Awareness Walk, Turkey Trot, and Field Day. Breakfast and lunch are offered daily to our students. The cafeteria is a shared space and is located on the lower level. Our students enjoy their meals while sitting in booths. Teachers supervise the students during mealtime. A puree menu is also offered. Our students participate in Adapted Physical Education (APE) with our APE teacher 3-5 days a week. The stage located in the auditorium is wheelchair accessible. Parents are invited to attend our Winter and Spring Concert to see their child shine on stage. Students receive daily art or music instruction provided by our very own art and music teachers. In addition, students participate in enriching art and music residency programs through the NYC Children’s Theater, Marquis Studios, and Education in Dance. The following related services are offered here at speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, vision, hearing ENL, and counseling. There are designated spaces for students to receive these therapies as an individual session or small group based upon their IEP. There is a mini sensory room outfitted with a swing and calm lighting in addition to tangible items (i.e. sequin board). All 8 classrooms have a designated calming area for students in need of a break in an effort to self- regulate and rejoin their peers. All classes follow a research- based literacy curriculum. HMH Into Reading addresses all areas of early literacy with an evidence- based scope and sequence to develop fluent and automatic readers. Fundations is a multi- sensory literacy approach to teach foundational reading and spelling skills (phonics, high frequency words, fluency, and handwriting). Structured teaching is a program used specifically in our 6:1:1 classes. There are three key components of structured teaching. Classrooms are highly organized classroom with limited distractions and clearly defined areas. Each student has their own object, picture, or word schedule to support transitions and prepare them for the sequence of the day’s activities. Students participate in workstations to build their independence in both academic and functional task completion. Our curriculum incorporates literacy, math, social studies, science, social emotional learning, and pre-vocational experiences. Students have an opportunity to explore a variety of interests while developing vocational skills with hands-on experiences including deliveries, stocking, shredding, recycling and managing the school’s mobile library.
